Student-Centred Learning: Personalized Approaches to Inclusive VET:

How Luovi vocational education institutions tailor learning experiences to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring inclusivity

Within the framework of the DC VET project, on June 11-13, three dedicated school directors from Bosnia and Herzegovina attended a training seminar on social inclusion in Helsinki. Luovi Vocational College in Helsinki hosted a seminar, focusing on student-centred learning and personalised approaches to inclusive VET. This seminar brought together 21 teachers and school directors from project partner countries, all united in their goal to improve the competences of VET staff in supporting learners with fewer opportunities.

The primary aim of the seminar was to equip VET teachers and school directors with the skills and tools necessary to help all students, especially those from marginalised or disadvantaged backgrounds, to achieve their curriculum learning outcomes. The seminar emphasised creating a smooth transition for students into the job market and successful societal integration. The final product of this initiative will be a comprehensive toolkit on social inclusion, featuring practical strategies for VET staff in Western Balkan countries.

The three participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina returned home with numerous positive impressions and shared several aspects that particularly stood out to them.

  1. Accessible Curriculum: The seminar highlighted the importance of a diverse curriculum offering multiple pathways and flexible learning options to cater to different learning styles and paces. Luovi ensures that course materials are available in various formats, such as digital and large print, and in multiple languages. Adequate software and online support are also integral parts of this approach.
  2. Tutoring and Mentoring: Luovi provides personalised tutoring and mentoring for students needing additional support. This involves preparing and tracking individualised support plans to ensure effective implementation and positive outcomes. Disability services at Luovi ensure that students with disabilities have access to necessary accommodations, including assistive technologies and specialised support.
  3. Financial Assistance: Recognizing the financial barriers that can impede education, Luovi offers grants and scholarships targeted at underrepresented and economically disadvantaged groups. They also have developed work-study programs that allow students to earn while they learn, easing financial burdens.
  4. Inclusive Environment: Luovi enforces anti-discrimination policies to promote equality within VET institutions. They strive for faculty and staff diversity to reflect the student body and foster an inclusive atmosphere.
  5. Community Engagement: Establishing partnerships with local communities, businesses, and industries is another cornerstone of Luovi’s approach. These partnerships create opportunities for internships and job placements, enhancing students’ real-world experiences and employability.
  6. Continuous Improvement: To ensure ongoing progress in inclusivity, Luovi actively collects feedback from students and other stakeholders. They provide continuous training for educators and staff on inclusive practices and cultural competence.

By integrating these comprehensive elements, Luovi Vocational College exemplifies how the VET system can support a diverse range of learners, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed in their chosen vocational paths.
